Beng Melea Temple

Welcome to The Amazing Jungle Beng Melea Temple !

Beng Mealea is a temple in the Angkor Wat style located 40 km east of the main group of temples at Angkor, Cambodia, on the ancient royal highway to Preah Khan Kompong Svay.

Beng Melea is One of the largest Angkor temples Beng Mealea was built under King Suryavarman II, the founder of Angkor Wat. It is commonly believed to be a forerunner or ‘blueprint’ for Angkor Wat itself and is decorated in substantially the same art style. The temple has remained in its collapsed state, partly hidden by jungle and until recently rather inaccessible due to poor road conditions and landmines. Around 2003 the landmines were cleared by CMAC – Cambodia Mines Action Center and the Halo Trust and the temple opened to the public.

Why go?

Beng Mealea is not only the most interactive temple, with crumbling stone blocks acting as stairs to the temple’s many subterranean chambers, but it is also the most fun temple to explore. This nearly thousand-year-old temple covers several acres of jungle terrain and is made up of a handful of libraries and courtyards.
